T.H. Burroughs Family Butchers Est. 1942 is a third generation Family Butchers.

Thomas Howard Burroughs started business as a Butcher in Swindon at 203 Rodbourne Road, with a saying of “Our aim is to please.”

He employed my father, John Howard Burroughs, and two other gentlemen butchers of that time. He also hired his daughter, Joan, as an office girl, and Gertrude (Gertie), his wife, as the one to keep them all in line!

After many successful years of trading in a small village-like community, my Grandfather decided to close the shop after the Railway works closed.

I am Graham Howard Burroughs and I joined a family butchers business in Old Town Swindon, Keith Berry Butchers, in 1980. Keith decided to shut the Old Town shop and we moved to his father’s shop, B.V. Berry & Son, in the Ellendune Centre, Wroughton.

Several years later, whilst working for Richard Hawes at Jesse Smiths Marlborough, I was approached by the owners of Country Food and Dining to open a shop within their country store at Cobbs Farm Shop, Hungerford.

After my Grandfathers death in March 1982, T.H. Burroughs Family Butchers was resurrected on the 13th October 2008.

After 8 fantastic years, on 22nd January 2017, our time at Cobbs Farm Shop came to end. We decided to head back to our roots in Swindon, where we opened our very own T.H.Burroughs Family Butcher, Delicatessen and Farmshop at the end of January.

Our motto is “ALWAYS A PLEASURE NEVER A CHORE”, and maybe we should include Gramps’ “OUR AIM IS TO PLEASE.”

What makes you the UK's Best Small Shop

T.H.Burroughs Family Butchers is a small family run farmshop in Swindon. Originally established in 1942 by Thomas Howard Burroughs, we are now a third generation Family Butchers with Graham Howard Burroughs at the helm. We offer a vast range of meats, fish, cheeses, olives, vegetables, homemade pies and pastries, frozen goodies and a huge variety of chutneys, breads, eggs and cakes for customers to try. We're always trying out new supplies in the shop, creating our own recipes, and particularly love to use local suppliers where we can to reduce our carbon footprint. We know exactly where all our meat comes from and ensure that the animals are well looked after, even visiting the farms and suppliers for our own assurance. We are members of AHDB Beef & Lamb, providing quality over quantity every time. Our motto is 'Always a pleasure, never a chore'.

What innovations did you initiate to combat the impact of COVID-19

We've been lucky as a food outlet to remain open during Covid-19, able to provide to the community when panic was setting in. Shop local became the new mantra. We got in extra supplies that we don't normally stock due to increasing demand. Our customers have been very understanding during the process and we've kept them updated through our website and social media. We shortened our working hours during lockdown as we were becoming increasingly busy and wanted to relieve the pressure on our staff. We have hand sanitizer available and reduced the number of customers allowed in the shop to 4 at a time, however we are an incredibly flexible and friendly team so customers know they can simply ask if they need anything. Regular customers in isolation were able to request deliveries to their homes and we've just bought in some disposable masks to meet the latest guidelines.

Tell us how you engage with the local community

Over the years we have provided raffle prizes to various charities and local school fetes to help them raise money and increase awareness of our business, as well as running BBQ's for other events in the local area such as the Stratton Stroll. We regularly supply to The Wheatsheaf meat draw and supply many other local restaurants and pubs with their meat. Still today we get customers who say they live just around the corner and didn't know we were there! In the last few months customers have been actively choosing to shop locally, certainly for quality meat, rather than going to the larger supermarkets. We like to stock things from local suppliers like honey, art, eggs, beer - simply take a look through our Facebook page to see all the great local produce we have.
