Job Description

We are excited to have an opportunity arise for a combined retail assistant & bicycle mechanic at our second workshop based in the University of Surrey Stag Hill campus.

The role will be part time to begin with (25 hours per week) potentially increasing to full time in due course if the level of work supports it. The role may also include busy period, holiday or event cover at our main store at Sutton Green Garden Centre on an overtime basis.

The main objectives of each element of the job are detailed below.

Bike mechanic

  • General repairs and basic servicing. Ranging from a puncture repair / tube fit to full bike strip and rebuild.
  • Troubleshooting issues and planning / pricing repairs.
  • Maintain a consistently high standard of workmanship.
  • Comfortable working on any bike – old / new / entry level / high end.
  • Assist with keeping stock records and request replenishment stock as required.
  • Maintain a tidy, organised and safe workshop.

Retail assistant

  • General retail tasks using EPoS system.
  • Assist with keeping stock records and request replenishment stock as required.
  • Customer service - welcoming new customers and building up good working relationships to retain their business. Dealing with any issues or problems as quickly and efficiently as possible, with management support available if needed.
  • Work with and support management in product planning, promo events & merchandising.
  • Work with and support management in web and social media content.
  • Other general admin tasks as and when needed.

Skills/Experience Required

Our ideal candidate can show the following qualities;

  • Cytech Level 2 or other proven equivalent (required).
  • Good technical knowledge of bikes, accessories and cycling itself with at least 2-3 years’ experience in the industry (required).
  • Computer literate – experience using an EPoS system and web builder software (required although system specific training will be given).
  • Excellent literacy and communication skills - face to face / on the phone/ emails etc.
  • Personable & approachable.
  • Self motivated & proactive, happy to work alone or as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Good organisational and time keeping skills.
  • Well presented – uniform and relevant protective gear will be provided.
  • Flexibility to adapt to varied tasks where necessary.
