Samways and Son are 70 years old!

Posted on in Business News, Cycles News

It is not very often that a business can say they have been trading for 70 years, but Samways and Son now can!

Samways and sonSamways and Son is a family run business at 70 Leigh Road, Wimborne, Dorset.

Samways and Son was founded by Walter Samways just around the corner in Crescent Road. The business dates back to at least 1927 where a directory lists Walter as a cycle agent at 8 Crescent Road.

By 1939 Walters's son Charles took over the business and in 1949 the business moved to its current location. Charles expanded the business to include TV rentals and sales of tumble dryers, washing machines, paraffin, prams and mopeds.

In 1971 Charles suffered a stroke and Andrew took over the business. Once Mark left school he joined his father in the family business.

When Andrew retired, Mark took over running the shop with his wife Michelle and the staff.

Samways and Son have had an amazingly unique journey from 8 Crescent Road to 70 Leigh Road over the last 70 years. They have watched the business and industry change with a multitude of happy moments and memories as well as challenges along the way, the biggest challenge being the arrival of the internet. However, still to this day, people support their local independent bike shop.
