Fine food retailers in the running to be Best Small Shop 2019

Posted on in Business News

There is now just over 3 weeks to go until the Best Small Shop in the UK for 2019 is announced at the reception which will be held in the House of Commons! To celebrate the competition, we will be introducing you to the fantastic shops that have been shortlisted and telling you about the wonderful ways in which they continously help their communities and why they stood out to the judges.

This year we are delighted to say that there has been a few of fine food shops shortlisted, this includes a wine merchant, a specialist tea stockist and a cheesemonger.

Richardsons Of Whitehaven

Based in Whitehaven, Cumbria, Richardsons Of Whitehaven was founded in 1995 and has been active in the Cumbrian Community ever since.

The independent shop offers a wide range of fine wines, rare vintage ports, hampers, gins and also roasts its own coffee beans in store. The shop has been active in organising major maritime festivals, veterans parades, air shows, markets and photographic exhibitions, raising considerable sums of money for various charities through these events. The shop is also the honorary Consulate office to the US Navy by a historical quirk.

The Little Cheesemonger

The Little Cheesemonger is set in the historic castle village of Rhuddlan in North Wales. This little cheese shop stocks cheese from tiny local producers like a seasonal Ewe's raw milk cheese that melts like an ice cream at room temperature, right over to nutty hard cheese with aged crunchy bits from sandstone caves in Switzerland. Others on offer include an artisan cheese smoked using oak whiskey barrels and a triple cream cheese or a cheese encrusted with roses, cornflowers and marigolds. The Little Cheesemonger also creates show stopping cheese wedding cakes and sells locally baked artisan bread delivered daily, preserves and raw Welsh honey, olives and even some Stornoway Black pudding.

Tea Traders

A specialist teashop, cafe and tea retailer in Camarthen has been named on the shortlist of retailers in the running to be named Britain's Best Small Shop of 2019.

Tea Traders stocks over 100 loose-leaf teas, as well as quality tea wares, tea gifts, and Welsh crafts.

The cafe also provides training and employment for young adults with learning disabilities. It is always looking for ways to engage, surprise and reward customers, and to encourage more people to visit the town, regularly creating themed window displays to promote town and community events including the town's annual river festival and amateur theatre shows.

For more information about Richardsons of Whitehaven or The Little Cheesemonger you can visit their pages in the Indie Retail Shop directory. Keep up to date with the Best Small Shops competition by following our Twitter, Facebook and Instagram pages.
