As an ethical, packaging-free, zero waste provisions business, Nourish Zero Waste has really had an impact on shopping habits in the local area in the past two years, as well as supporting similar businesses setting up around the country. Founded by Sarah Martin, the first shop opened in March 2018 in Topsham just outside Exeter, followed by a second shop in Magdalen Road in April 2019. Our aim is to offer an alternative shopping experience to people who are keen to reduce their use of packaging and plastics, opt for healthier ingredients and start their journey to a more sustainable way of life
Best Small Shops competition 2020
What makes you the UK's Best Small Shop
Our two small zero waste shops (one 12 sqm the other 16 sqm) offer 240 products that are bought by weight, and 200 non-food items. We let customers buy as much or little as they like. Each sale counts as one piece of plastic; we estimate we've saved 150,000 pieces so far. All areas of the shop meet our environmental aims, from suppliers to packaging. We run a voluntary customer 'round up' for local cancer charity Hospiscare, in March we donated £1600. Our loyalty scheme rewards customers using reusable containers with a £5 discount - they can use this or donate it to charity. Staff are employed on a Living Wage and we use a local network for design, PR, photography and accounting. Our social media presence is vibrant, we have approx. 2,500 followers on Facebook 2,000 on Instagram. We like to be noticed! Sarah was named one of the top 15 businesswomen 'Devon can be proud of' for International Women's Day 2020.What innovations did you initiate to combat the impact of COVID-19
During lockdown we became actively involved in webinars and Zoom meetings to continue bringing our promotion of zero waste shopping plus the need for businesses to be mindful of the environment as they reopen; Exeter Chamber Friday Lockdown, Exeter Business Club and next, Exeter Living Magazine's Business Club. We sent out a press release urging people to consider 'keeping it green through Covid-19'. Not long after reopening we implemented a campaign 'All You Need is Local' which we put together with four other independent businesses, two coffee shops, a farm shop and wine shop who are our neighbours on Magdalen Road to reward cyclists visiting us. This gives discounts or additional points on reward cards and has proved really successful. During lockdown we used the time to create a new website which provides a much better showcase, including a downloadable PDF of products.Tell us how you engage with the local community
We source many products from suppliers in a 10-mile radius from dried chillis from Woodbury to tea from Dartmoor. We cross-promote; buying a collapsible cup gives you a free hot drink in Route 2 Cafà ©. Our TerraCycle point takes hard-to-recycle waste like crisp packets and toothpaste tubes and raises funds for "Ellie's Fund" (supporting young people with brain tumours). We run Topsham Traders Facebook page with Love Topsham to help traders share information and advice. We assist zero waste start-ups inc Fleet Scoop, Weighsted and The House of Green. We want other zero waste businesses to succeed, benefit from our experiences and learn from our mistakes. We support the Young Enterprise Award advising competing teams and even stocking relevant products in the shops. This gives encouragement to the next generation of entrepreneurs whilst reminding them that green is good! Our Staff
