Job Description

Paradise Cycles is looking for another mechanic to join our team. Our newly established workshop (opened October 2015) is on a busy commuter road in East London, and we're anticipating another busy summer period ahead. If you have a passion for fixing bikes, talking about bikes, and most importantly, riding bikes, then you’ll fit right in and we want to meet you.

We do not currently stock new bikes, so servicing and repair jobs represent the majority of the work undertaken by our mechanics. Other duties involve managing work orders, restocking & pricing up items, answering phone calls, talking to customers, and other typical shop keeping tasks.

Our company philosophy is aligned to re-use and recycle principles. This approach requires mechanics with a keen eye for detail and plenty of experience talking to customers about their cycling habits as a way of troubleshooting mechanical issues, achieving a better bike fit & suggesting ways to make the bike more fit for purpose.

The level of knowledge & understanding required is fairly high, so the more industry experience and patience you possess the easier the job becomes.

  • The workshop is open 7 days a week; so one weekend shift may be required.
  • Hourly wage is negotiable depending on experience, but our minimum rate is in line with the current UK living wage.

Skills/Experience Required

Ideally, at least 2 years full time in a typical bike workshop environment, plus the following:

  • Cytech Technical Level 2 preferred. Equivalent qualifications considered.
  • Proficiency in all manner of repairs, and familiarity with all workshop tools. Ideally including hydraulic brakes & wheel building.
  • Excellent communication skills i.e. fluency in English, fluency in bicycle terminology, & the ability to convey multiple repair options to customers, both over the phone & in person.
  • Strong product knowledge i.e. familiarity with typical brands & suppliers.
  • Cash handling and card transaction experience.
  • Stock control and stock take experience.
  • An ideal candidate should be able to relate to commuter cyclists in as many ways as possible i.e. It would help to have first hand experience of cycling in a city as a primary mode of transport. Lots of our customers have bad experiences with bike theft, altercations with drivers etc.

Any weak areas can be improved upon with training and on the job experience, so our main priority during the application, interview, & trial process is to check that you're aware of the importance of all of the above.
