Family-run Polesworth fish and chip shop celebrates 40 years in business with half-price chips.

Posted on in Business News

It was four decades ago that Peter and Kika Savvas moved from Gloucester to Polesworth to take over the village chip shop. The couple were both born on the island of Cyprus and hoped the decision - a huge financial gamble - would help build a life for their children.

Polesworth Fish Bar, located opposite the historic Polesworth Abbey in a building more than 250 years old has undergone huge changes. In 1995 the shop was transformed from a tiny takeaway with two fryers and little room for customers into a modern bright establishment with three fryers and a restaurant area. The shop changed again following the Covid pandemic and the addition of items to the menu such as pizzas.

“It’s hard to believe that it’s been 40 years. Things have changed so much in the village, and we have constantly tried to evolve to cater to changing tastes and people’s lifestyles,” says Peter.

“I remember at pub kicking out time in the 80s and 90s we would have queues out the door. It’s different now and things are tougher, for all small businesses, but one thing that remains the same is we have always provided food of the highest quality - that we as a family love to eat - and we are incredibly grateful for the loyal customers we have got to know over the years. Many of our customers now order online or call up to order.”

Polesworth Fish Bar has helped with local fundraising including school raffles, sponsoring local football teams, and supporting the village’s annual carnival.

To celebrate the birthday chips will be half-price in the month of April.
